The TwinCities TMJ and Facial PainClinic is devoted solely to the evaluation and care of patients with temporomandibular joint disorders.
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located in front of each ear where the lower jaw meets the skull. The initials "TMJ" refer to the joint itself. Problems or pain in the joint or muscles in the head and neck region are often referred to as temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)
The signs and symptoms of TMD are common in the general population and may include: · Jaw pain · Headaches · Earaches · Neck pain · Aching of the teeth · TMJ noises (clicking, popping sounds) · Limited jaw range of motion · Changes in the bite relationship
These symptoms may indicate a disorder within the temporomandibular joint itself or the muscles associated with jaw function or both.
Many times the patient's symptoms are aggravated by certain factors. Some factors that may perpetuate the symptoms are: · Clenching of the teeth (while awake) · Bruxism (grinding of the teeth while asleep) · Gum chewing, nail biting and other oral habits · Stress · Inadequate dental support (i.e. multiple missing teeth, poor bite relationship) · Poor posture or physical condition · Systemic disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue diseases, etc.)
We believe our first responsibility is to inform and educate our patients.
Research findings and clinical experience have clearly demonstrated that a thorough, conservative approach can be very successful in managing the symptoms of most patients suffering from temporomandibular disorders.
